UnCabaret is kicking off its 25th anniversary of soul baring, mind bending, intimate, conversational, idiosyncratic comedy. We are in love with unique voices and have been since our legendary days in WeHo, in that downstairs room at Luna Park. Since then we’ve been on Comedy Central, Amazon, NPR, PBS and audible. Featured in the New York Times, Entertainment Weekly and The Hollywood Reporter. We’ve been at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival, The Ace Hotel, had spin offs, tours, a podcast and 5 critically acclaimed CD’s. But the heart of it has always been our Sunday night show.
UnCabaret, which was arguably the first ‘alternative comedy’ show was, and has remained, a hotbed of personal storytelling The LA Times dubbed Beth Lapides, host, producer, creatrix of UnCabaret, the “High Priestess” of ‘alternative comedy’. Meaning the revolution that reclaimed comedy as an art form, allowing for depth, meaning, even transcendence. Of course, sparking the movement is one thing. Our commitment to fanning the flames, to continued reinvention is strong. Recently UnCabaret was named one of the 5 Best Comedy Shows in LA by Los Angeles Magazine. The LA Times recently wrote about the new UnCabaret. Frontiers wrote this nice review. UnCabaret was arguably the very first ‘alternative comedy’ show and has remained a hotbed of personal storytelling. UnCabaret fostered the careers of iconoclastic comedy stars like Patton Oswalt, Kathy Griffin, Bob Odenkirk, Julia Sweeney, Margaret Cho, Greg Behrendt, Laura Kightlinger, Mike McDonald, Scott Thompson, Merrill Markoe, David Cross, Janeane Garofalo, Andy Kindler, Jeff Garlin, Andy Dick, Dana Gould, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Randy and Jason Sklar, and Taylor Negron. UnCabaret is where award-winning comedy writers like Judd Apatow, John Riggi, Michael Patrick King and Larry Charles have come to connect directly with audiences. Where luminaries like Jon Stewart, Sarah Silverman, Roseanne Barr, Sandra Bernhard, Carrie Fisher and Bill Maher have popped in for some comedy free styling. Our current home is the showroom in Au Lac, an elegant, intimate vegan venue in #DTLA, aka downtown Los Angeles. More info about the particulars of the Sunday Show here.
